#71 – The Mathematician

The numbers, they don’t match up…

They’re different today,
than they were yesterday.
My calculations remain the same-
Is this some sort of game?

One day it’s a little,
the next it’s a ton.
One moment it’s fully,
the later it’s none.

Maybe I’m crazy.
My prescriptions at fault.
They’re all running together.
My composure is shot.

My glasses slip off,
but the numbers— they stay.
They’re surrounding me now,
I can’t get away!

They are fed up with my meddling,
with equations and algorithms.
They’re infinite and absolute,
so I cannot bargain with them.

They poke at my brain,
leaving me no privacy.
I was so obsessed with them,
now they’re infatuated with me.

They’re getting more aggressive,
teaming up to make my fate.
The two’s are throwing javel-ones,
the nine’s lobbing their gren-eights.

They’re breaking me open now,
seeing how far I’ll reach.
Subtracting little parts of me,
and multiplying smiles with each.

And when they’re done,
they’ll come right back.
Matching my old persistence
with their relentless planned attack.

They’ll keep on their studies,
dividing me… to and fro.
And for my crime,
I’ll suffer the time-

Even though…

All I wanted was to know…

…all I wanted was to know…
