Internship Follies...

So I spoke about my internship in my last post, and I said I’d show what has come to fruition as a result.

So… that is the purpose of this post.

The quick-flip poster I was asked to do was for a theatre function that had it’s inaugural performance in mid-February.

The concept is actually quite interesting. I had one of the group members give me the skinny… basically, there’s a lot of familiarity in theatre today. When you go to see a play or a performance, it’s generally something you’ve seen or read before. Romeo & Juliet, Hamlet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, etc.

So was created the Colonial Empire New Play Festival. In an attempt to bring new plays, and new playwrights into the limelight. I thought it was really inspired, and apparently a lot of other people did too. The second annual Play Festival (which I hope I get to make a poster for too!!) had like 10 times the submissions!

They asked me to bring them a poster concept, so I drafted two. The first one is a little bit more easily identifiable as something of my creation.

It was decided however, that the colors and layout were quite traditional for theatre plays (maybe not pink; but black, white and red) and was a touch too similar to the poster for The Full Monty, which was the current production being put on by the AASU Masquers.

So, it was decided that my second poster concept would be the one that would be built upon. After some work and some brainstorms thrown back and forth between the group… not to mention the threatening of scalps (!!), and I got this—

They really liked my resolution of giving each play it’s own visual identity, as with new plays there needed to be an immediately digestible selling point, and we couldn’t very well slap the synopses on the poster. Additionally, the eye grabbing jauntiness that the font and layout embodied. Just the kind of vibe that the brand new festival needed.

My favorite one of the three is Residue, the synopsis described a woman using lucid dreaming in order to escape her reality- and in her dreams, she gets everything she ever wanted, most importantly… a dream lover.

The other two have a more immediate relation to their synopses, but something about the one for Residue, is mysterious in it’s simplicity. My favorite. (Probably why it’s in the middle.)

Next update… I don’t know. I think i have something coming around the corner, and I’m also thinking about lifting the veil on some of the concepts I have for graphic work that are stewing about in my head. Maybe. Or perhaps I’ll put up my Film Festival that was created for Corporate Identity.

We’ll see.

I’m telling you man, I need to get deathly ill and go to the emergency room more often. It really seems to light a fire under your ass. I mean wow man, two decent posts in less than 48 hours! Jeebus!

But look man, I only have on ovary left and I need to keep that one. Not much more I can keep sacrificing to keep the heat on. Let me see, I could spare a kidney, maybe an appendix or gall bladder, but after that you’re pushin’ it a bit. Haha

Anyway, these last two posts are great and I hope you keep them coming. You already know that I love the poster you did for the internship and I am so jealous of the font. Keep up the amazing work, you are going to go so far :)

By the way, thanks for the honorable mention in your last post. I appreciate it a lot! Much love for you, much love!
